Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q:What is the difference between a pure bristle paint brush and one made of synthetic filaments such as nylon or polyester?

A:A pure bristle brush is made from natural hog hair.  It should never be used in latex paints because it will absorb moisture that will lead to poor painting results. The most widely recommended use for a bristle brush is applying oil base stains and varnishes.  They are also best for fiberglass applications and adhesives.

Q:Why do some roller covers have plastic cores while others have phenolic?

A:Plastic or PVC cores are good for normal painting projects involving latex paints and are generally used on consumer roller covers.  However, phenolic core covers are recommended for use with oil base paints, solvents, and hot roofing applications.

Q:When selecting a roller cover, how do I know what nap size to use?

A:Short nap sizes such as 3/16” or 1/4" are recommended for very smooth surfaces such as doors and cabinets.  3/8” and 1/2" naps are generally used on medium surfaces such as sheetrock walls.  3/4", 1”, and 1 1/4” are used on rough to very rough surfaces such as stucco walls and concrete blocks.

Q:What does it mean when a roller cover is made from premium woven fabric?

A:Most roller fabric is made by a knitted process.  However, premium fabric is woven and therefore less likely to shed.  No fabric is 100% shed proof or entirely lint free, but woven is highly recommended when the quality of the finish is critical.

Q:Why did my last painting project turn out so bad?  I spent $30.00 per gallon on the paint and then purchased a $2.00 brush at a discount store.

A:Paint manufactures have made tremendous improvements to their paints in recent years. However, you must still apply them with a quality paint applicator.
